For this week’s Tavern Brawl, Blizzard is giving players their first taste of how a co-op mode might work in Hearthstone. The Brawl, titled “Unite Against Mechazod,” is the first game mode where the goal is not to kill the opposing player, but instead, an A.I. controlled minion.
Mechazod is mechanical gnome from the Warcraft universe, found in Northrend, who is trying to “cure” living gnomes of the Curse of Flesh and turn them into mechs. He is also referenced by the attack call of the Clockwork Gnome. Now, he’s coming to Hearthstone to defeat it’s heroes.
The mode features some brand new gameplay elements. Most importantly, if either you or your “opponent” die, you both lose the match. Fortunately, you will still get your bonus pack regardless of the outcome of your first fight against Mechazod. Also, the match will use premade decks, probably to eliminate 1 turn kills by certain classes (at 2 attack it looks awfully tempting to just use Shadow Word: Pain on him). Because he flips sides of the board with each turn and has taunt, you won’t be able to attack the other player even if you wanted to, making him truly your only enemy in this fight.
This new take on Tavern Brawl looks to be exciting and, at the very least, is a good test for possible future cooperative games. The Tavern Brawl is scheduled to begin at its regular time on Wednesday, so be sure not to miss it.

A malevolent mechanized malefactor is coming, and you’ll need to join forces with your fellow Tavern Brawlers to take him down! That’s right: Everybody’s on the same side in our exciting new Tavern Brawl: Unite Against Mechazod.
Combine forces to defeat Gearmaster Mechazod. You’ll each be piloting a pre-built deck assembled to give both you and your partner on the other side of the board a chance to take out the technological terror. Each turn he’ll move from your side of the board to your friend’s, and you’ll need to play your cards just right to bring him down together. Watch out! If one of you is defeated, then you both are, so don’t be stingy with the heals.
Gearmaster Mechazod is ready for you! He’s got an arsenal of gnasty gnomish inventions and he’s going to use every tool at his greasy fingertips to wreck you and your partner. On the plus side, you’ll walk away with your Tavern Brawl Hearthstone pack whether you win or lose!
Unite Against Mechazod arrives at the usual Tavern Brawl time this week, so gear up to cooperate, annihilate, and exterminate!
